What is expanded metal mesh?
expanded metal mesh is traditionally seen as a metal material with diamond shaped holes. expanded metal is produced by an expanding machine, which uses a pressured slitting and stretching process to transform solid metal sheets and coils into expanded mesh. The expanded metal company pioneered the process, known as expanding metal, in 1889. Although modern machines are computer programmed and speedier than the original machines the process of expanding remains largely unchanged. Metals can be expanded in a range of material thickness and to a broad choice of patterns to suit specific applications.
Patterns & Shapes - beyond the diamond
In addition to the traditional diamond shaped range of meshes, the expanding metal process can produce a dynamic variety.
Expanded Metal Production
The process for expanding metal was first patented in Hartlepool, UK in the 1880's and despite the amount of time which has elapsed since then, the process remains true to the original idea. Most types of metal, including precious and specially produced metals, can be expanded. Other materials, such as plastics or other ductile materials can also be expanded.
The process is simple but incredibly effective. |
|
Sheets or coils or metal are fed into the expanding machine. A little metal can create a lot of mesh, adding value and saving resources and money. |
|
Each machine is fitted with a unique "Knife", dedicated to a particular pattern. New patterns and knives can be created in-house for specific applications. |
|
The machines are then programmed or manually controlled to ensure the metal is expanded to the exact specification. Rigorous quality checks are carried out to ensure product consistency throughout the expanding process. |
|
Using the unique shearing and streching process means very little waste is created. the metal is sheared and then streched in a single process creating the apertures and therefore expanding the metal. The mesh is then either cut into sheets or wound onto coils ready for shipping or further processing. |
We can offer an extensive range of standard meshes and an unrivalled capability to develop bespoke meshes to specification. We manufacture 7 days a week and are happy for customers to visit our premises to see their mesh in production. |
